How it's calculated

Perimeter = 2 × (width + length). We subtract about 3 feet per doorway, add waste for miter cuts, then divide by the length of one piece and round up.

Tips for buying baseboard & trim

  • Miter cuts and mistakes eat trim fast — 10% waste is a sensible minimum, more for lots of corners.
  • Buy the longest pieces that fit your walls to minimize seams on long runs.
  • Account for outside corners; they waste more than inside corners because of the miter direction.
  • Paint or stain trim before installing, then just touch up the nail holes — far faster than cutting in later.
  • Keep a couple of extra feet for scribe pieces and future repairs.
  • Don't forget quarter-round or shoe molding if your floor isn't perfectly flat.

Frequently asked questions

How much baseboard do I need for a 12x14 room?

The perimeter is 52 ft. Minus one 3 ft doorway and with 10% waste that's about 54 ft — five 12 ft pieces.

How do I account for doorways?

Subtract about 3 feet of baseboard per doorway, since trim doesn't run across an opening. Set the doorway count and we handle it.

How much extra trim for waste?

10% is a good minimum for miter cuts; go higher for rooms with many corners or angled walls.

What length pieces should I buy?

Longer pieces mean fewer seams but are harder to handle. Pick 8, 12 or 16 ft and we compute the piece count.
